MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard) is the least expensive and most popular paint-grade moulding material. It is preprimed, easy to install, and durable. In comparing to Finger-Joint Pine, MDF is more resistant to dents, has no joints, does not crack, split, twist or warp. The lengths are all long with no short lengths. Also, MDF is more dimensionally stable, which makes it useful for all moldings because it doesn’t shrink width-wise like solid wood can. MDF doesn’t contribute to deforestation since it is made up of wood particles, resigns, and glue. It is the moulding of choice for multi-million dollar homes, as well as entry to high end tract housing.
